Apr\u00e8s avoir travers\u00e9 le continent am\u00e9ricain et l\u2019oc\u00e9an Pacifique, Henri Cernuschi aborde le\u00a0<strong>Japon<\/strong>, avant de gagner la\u00a0<strong>Chine<\/strong>, puis l\u2019<strong>Indon\u00e9sie<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Ceylan<\/strong>\u00a0et l\u2019<strong>Inde<\/strong>. Le collectionneur est marqu\u00e9 par la richesse artistique des pays qu\u2019il visite. Tout au long de son s\u00e9jour en Asie d\u2019octobre 1871 \u00e0 d\u00e9cembre 1872, Henri Cernuschi acquiert\u00a0plusieurs milliers d&rsquo;objets\u00a0sur les march\u00e9s de l&rsquo;art japonais et chinois, en particulier\u00a0des bronzes, dont il est le premier \u00e0 comprendre la valeur ; mais \u00e9galement<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>des c\u00e9ramiques, des estampes, des livres illustr\u00e9s, des peintures, des photographies et des objets en bois laqu\u00e9 et sculpt\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Ce voyage est \u00e0 l\u2019origine d\u2019une des plus importantes collections d\u2019art asiatique en Europe<\/strong>. Le r\u00e9pertoire des formes et des motifs, l\u2019innovation technique des pi\u00e8ces de la collection Cernuschi, deviennent des\u00a0mod\u00e8les pour toute une g\u00e9n\u00e9ration de cr\u00e9ateurs. Vivant entour\u00e9 de ses collections et accueillant les artistes et les amateurs d\u2019art asiatique,\u00a0Cernuschi fait de sa \u00ab maison mus\u00e9e \u00bb l\u2019un des hauts lieux du japonisme jusqu\u2019\u00e0 sa mort en 1896.
