Il laisse derri\u00e8re lui une France endett\u00e9e et, comme h\u00e9ritier, un enfant de 5 ans trop jeune pour r\u00e9gner, Louis XV. Le 2 septembre, le duc Philippe d\u2019Orl\u00e9ans (1674-1723), neveu du d\u00e9funt, prend la r\u00e9gence du royaume. La ville, en particulier le Palais-Royal, r\u00e9sidence du R\u00e9gent, devient ainsi le c\u0153ur de la vie politique. S\u2019ensuit une p\u00e9riode d\u2019une intense effervescence culturelle qui donne naissance \u00e0 un monde d\u2019innovations philosophiques, \u00e9conomiques et artistiques : Voltaire, Marivaux, Montesquieu, Law, Watteau\u2026 en sont les h\u00e9ros les mieux connus. La fr\u00e9n\u00e9sie \u00e9conomique et financi\u00e8re, avec l\u2019invention du papier monnaie et la banqueroute de 1720, la ponctue de coups de th\u00e9\u00e2tre retentissants. Les commandes royales se rar\u00e9fient, laissant \u00e0 diverses personnes priv\u00e9es l\u2019initiative d\u2019un go\u00fbt nouveau. Les sculpteurs et menuisiers qui travaillaient pour la cour continuent \u00e0 exercer au sein de demeures en construction dans les faubourgs Saint-Germain ou Saint-Honor\u00e9.<br>L\u2019effervescence dans la cr\u00e9ation mobili\u00e8re va de pair, \u00e0 Paris, avec une hausse de la consommation des produits de luxe : porcelaines import\u00e9es d\u2019Asie, bronze dor\u00e9\u2026 s\u00e9duisent une client\u00e8le locale mais aussi internationale. Les boutiques comme celle d\u2019Edme-Fran\u00e7ois Gersaint, re\u00e7u en 1720 dans la corporation des marchands merciers, commercialisent meubles et objets qui sont le fruit du savoir-faire de diff\u00e9rents corps de m\u00e9tiers rivalisant d\u2019excellence (menuisiers-\u00e9b\u00e9nistes, fondeurs, orf\u00e8vres\u2026). L\u2019axe des Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es est r\u00e9am\u00e9nag\u00e9 : on construit un pont tournant au bout du jardin des Tuileries, la place Louis XV (actuelle place de la Concorde) est mise en projet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Courtisans et financiers font construire de nouveaux h\u00f4tels dans les faubourgs Saint-Germain et Saint-Honor\u00e9. L\u2019h\u00f4tel d\u2019\u00c9vreux (actuel palais de l\u2019\u00c9lys\u00e9e), l\u2019h\u00f4tel de Matignon ou le palais Bourbon sont alors \u00e9difi\u00e9s. La silhouette des si\u00e8ges, tables-consoles, bureaux ou biblioth\u00e8ques s\u2019affranchit de la rigueur aust\u00e8re du si\u00e8cle pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent pour s\u2019animer de courbes et contrecourbes. Leur d\u00e9cor, comme celui des boiseries, s\u2019enrichit d\u2019ornements inspir\u00e9s de la nature, qui se m\u00ealent aux influences du baroque italien m\u00e9dit\u00e9es par Gilles-Marie Oppenord, architecte du R\u00e9gent, ou aux espagnolettes, ces bustes f\u00e9minins en bronze dor\u00e9 popularis\u00e9s par l\u2019\u00e9b\u00e9niste Charles Cressent. Sont pos\u00e9es les fondations du style dit \u00ab rocaille \u00bb.
