Uniques au monde, r\u00e9unissant plus de 200\u2009000 \u0153uvres, celles-ci offrent un panorama tr\u00e8s large de la cr\u00e9ation du XV\u200ae si\u00e8cle \u00e0 nos jours, en Europe et jusqu\u2019au Japon. M\u00e9connu, ce fonds est l\u2019un des plus importants au monde. La collection elle-m\u00eame se constitue d\u00e8s les ann\u00e9es 1880, peu apr\u00e8s la fondation de l\u2019institution. Des donations l\u00e9gendaires d\u2019\u00e9minents amateurs d\u2019art sont \u00e0 sa source telles celles de Jules Maciet, auteur du projet utopique d\u2019encyclop\u00e9die par l\u2019image, ou encore Philippe de Chennevi\u00e8res, l\u2019un des plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres collectionneurs.
