L\u2019invention de la photographie en 1839 bouleverse les aspirations artistiques. Pr\u00e9sentes en arri\u00e8re plan, pour accompagner une sc\u00e8ne de genre ou repr\u00e9sent\u00e9es pour elles-m\u00eames, les architectures des villes visit\u00e9es par les peintres \u2013 citons Constantinople, Tanger, Cordoue, Alger ou J\u00e9rusalem \u2013 trouvent une place de choix dans leurs compositions.<\/p>\n<p>Les arcs outrepass\u00e9s, en forme de fer \u00e0 cheval, les minarets et les moucharabiehs concentrent toutes les attentions. Profitant des opportunit\u00e9s de voyages li\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019actualit\u00e9, ils sont en effet les t\u00e9moins privil\u00e9gi\u00e9s des \u00e9v\u00e8nements historiques : ils accompagnent les missions diplomatiques europ\u00e9ennes, soutiennent des causes comme la guerre d\u2019ind\u00e9pendance de la Gr\u00e8ce ou participent \u00e0 des exp\u00e9ditions savantes.
