Son \u0153uvre comprend des gouaches et des aquarelles de petit format qui constituent une chronique mondaine de son \u00e9poques : sc\u00e8nes d&rsquo;int\u00e9rieur inspir\u00e9es par Greuze, sc\u00e8nes de boudoir plus l\u00e9g\u00e8res. Avec ses sc\u00e8nes d\u2019int\u00e9rieur, Jean-Baptiste Mallet se fait le chroniqueur des m\u0153urs et des costumes. Il s\u2019int\u00e9resse particuli\u00e8rement \u00e0 l\u2019intimit\u00e9 des toilettes f\u00e9minines : le bouquet que l&rsquo;on attache \u00e0 son corsage, le bas que l&rsquo;on enfile, le subtiles qualit\u00e9s, Mallet se rallie au go\u00fbt troubadour propre \u00e0 la p\u00e9riode 1800-1830. Remettant le Moyen \u00c2ge \u00e0 l\u2019honneur, les peintres de ce courant choisissent des th\u00e8mes et des d\u00e9cors de l\u2019\u00e9poque m\u00e9di\u00e9vale, avec un grand souci de r\u00e9alisme.\u00a0 (<i>Genevi\u00e8ve de Brabant<\/i>, mus\u00e9e de Cherbourg\u00a0; la\u00a0<i>Salle de bains gothique<\/i>, mus\u00e9e de Caen).
