Il effectue ainsi une v\u00e9ritable rupture en exposant \u00e0 Paris, en 1877, la figure \u00ab repoussante \u00bb de son P\u00eacheur napolitain, v\u00e9ritable manifeste du v\u00e9risme napolitain. Les trois figures ou pastori du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle expos\u00e9es dans cette premi\u00e8re section repr\u00e9sentent un riche fermier, une femme du peuple et un vieillard \u00ab spogliato \u00bb, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire sans v\u00eatement, avec la t\u00eate, les mains et les pieds en terre cuite. Tous ces personnages, parfois rassembl\u00e9s par centaines autour de la Nativit\u00e9 dans la cr\u00e8che, forment un portrait de la population de Naples et de ses environs vaquant \u00e0 ses occupations quotidiennes. Contrairement aux bustes sculpt\u00e9s au XVIIIe si\u00e8cle par un Jean-Antoine Houdon, respirant l\u2019innocence et la fra\u00eecheur de l\u2019enfance favoris\u00e9e, la physionomie des jeunes Napolitains de Gemito va de la gravit\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019inqui\u00e9tude des \u00eatres \u00e9lev\u00e9s dans la pauvret\u00e9. Le petit gar\u00e7on nu accroupi sur un rocher, ce \u00ab cr\u00e9tin \u00bb, ce \u00ab petit monstre \u00bb, choque par son r\u00e9alisme, mais attire la foule des visiteurs et les critiques de tous, les journaux. La t\u00eate ingrate de l\u2019\u00c9tude de nu montre l\u2019impact que le r\u00e9alisme de Gemito a pu avoir sur son temps. Le sculpteur italien pr\u00e9sente \u00e9galement au Salon le bronze du Petit p\u00eacheur et son c\u00e9l\u00e8bre Porteur d\u2019eau, \u00e9vocation sensuelle de l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9 romaine. L\u2019Exposition universelle de 1878 lui donne l\u2019occasion de conforter cette popularit\u00e9 soudaine.<\/p>\n<p>Gemito peut faire venir de Naples sa compagne et muse, Mathilde Duffaud, jeune Fran\u00e7aise repr\u00e9sent\u00e9e ici par quelques dessins et un bronze de sa t\u00eate reposant sur un coussin.<\/p>\n<p>Plusieurs tableaux permettent d\u2019\u00e9voquer aussi la figure d\u2019Antonio Mancini, compagnon d\u2019enfance de Gemito, qui, comme lui, a commenc\u00e9 par des repr\u00e9sentations de jeunes gar\u00e7ons qu\u2019il a retrouv\u00e9 \u00e0 Paris. L\u2019un et l\u2019autre seront soutenus dans la capitale par leur compatriote, le peintre Giuseppe De Nittis, un ami de Degas.<\/p>\n<p>Le protecteur le plus notable de Gemito est cependant Ernest Meissonier, le peintre le plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bre de l\u2019\u00e9poque, qu\u2019il rencontre en 1878. Le sculpteur en fait un petit buste et le repr\u00e9sente, en statuette, en train de peindre. Il offrira au ma\u00eetre son grand bronze du P\u00eacheur napolitain.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Retour \u00e0 Naples, la folie<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gemito rentre \u00e0 Naples en janvier 1880. Mathilde, dont l\u2019\u00e9tat de sant\u00e9 s\u2019est d\u00e9t\u00e9rior\u00e9, y meurt en avril 1881. D\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9, le sculpteur part pour quelques mois \u00e0 Capri, o\u00f9 il mod\u00e8le plusieurs petits bustes. L\u2019ann\u00e9e suivante, il rencontre et \u00e9pouse peu apr\u00e8s Anna Cutolo, qui pose pour les peintres et devient sa nouvelle muse.<br \/>\nUn buste et de nombreux dessins montrent la beaut\u00e9 robuste des femmes de Campanie. En 1883, le baron de Mesnil fait construire pour Gemito une fonderie, o\u00f9, avec son beau-p\u00e8re, Masto Ciccio, il produit de splendides fontes \u00e0 la cire perdue.<\/p>\n<p>Mais, \u00e0 partir de 1885, l\u2019\u00e9tat mental de Gemito commence \u00e0 s\u2019alt\u00e9rer. Perturb\u00e9 par le projet de commande par le roi Umberto Ier d\u2019une statue monumentale de Charles Quint, l\u2019artiste se rend imm\u00e9diatement \u00e0 Paris pour demander conseil \u00e0 son ami Meissonier et r\u00e9alise une esquisse en cire, dont a \u00e9t\u00e9 tir\u00e9 le bronze pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 ici. En 1886, une autre commande du roi Umberto Ier pour un immense surtout de table en argent \u00e9branle davantage encore l\u2019\u00e9tat psychique du sculpteur, qui est hospitalis\u00e9 \u00e0 la clinique Fleurent de Naples. \u00c0 sa sortie, il s\u2019enferme dans une sorte d\u2019exil volontaire. Il revient alors \u00e0 ses sujets de pr\u00e9dilection, les jeunes p\u00eacheurs et les adolescents nus, mais dont les formes et les lignes se mani\u00e9risent, pour insister davantage sur les d\u00e9tails, comme dans un travail d\u2019orf\u00e8vre.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Gemito dessinateur du XXe si\u00e8cle<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Pendant les trente derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es de sa vie, Gemito continue, malgr\u00e9 son isolement, \u00e0 travailler et surtout \u00e0 beaucoup dessiner. Ce dessinateur hors pair annonce par sa modernit\u00e9 de nombreux mouvements et artistes venus bien apr\u00e8s lui. Le talent de Gemito s\u2019\u00e9panouit alors dans de tr\u00e8s grands dessins, trac\u00e9s plus fermement qu\u2019auparavant et souvent color\u00e9s. Il s\u2019agit notamment de portraits, aussi bien de femmes de la campagne que de membres de la bourgeoisie.<\/p>\n<p>Le dessin rend \u00e0 l\u2019artiste reclus toute sa libert\u00e9, celle d\u2019innover, de ne plus \u00eatre prisonnier de son enfance ou de l\u2019antique. Les \u0153uvres les plus \u00e9tonnantes sont certainement les portraits des enfants Bertolini, dont le p\u00e8re poss\u00e9dait l\u2019un des plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres h\u00f4tels de Naples. Les deux adolescents s\u2019inscrivent dans un espace \u00e9troit tout en hauteur, dans un contrapposto marqu\u00e9, dans la veine du mani\u00e9risme florentin. Leurs poses d\u2019adultes \u2013 ambigu\u00ebs \u2013 contrastent avec leurs tenues d\u2019enfants riches, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 provoquer un certain malaise, faisant penser \u00e0 l\u2019\u0153uvre future de Balthus.<\/p>\n<p>Les grands dessins de Gemito ont \u00e9t\u00e9 abondamment reproduits \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9poque dans la presse italienne, montr\u00e9s par Achille Minozzi, le plus important collectionneur du sculpteur, et tr\u00e8s remarqu\u00e9s par les artistes, en particulier Giorgio de Chirico et son fr\u00e8re, Alberto Savinio. Figurent \u00e9galement ici deux sculptures : une Gitane, en \u00e9cho au c\u00e9l\u00e8bre dessin de la Zingara, et la statuette d\u2019une femme nue, qui renvoie \u00e0 la m\u00eame modernit\u00e9 que celle des dessins, avec une radicalit\u00e9 anticipant les nus d\u2019un Charles Despiau ou d\u2019un Aristide Maillol.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000\">Le retour \u00e0 l\u2019antique<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Gemito s\u2019est toujours int\u00e9ress\u00e9 aux sculptures antiques conserv\u00e9es au Mus\u00e9e national. Dans les vingt derni\u00e8res ann\u00e9es de sa vie, il a voulu s\u2019y confronter, ainsi que l\u2019illustre sa Psych\u00e9 en pl\u00e2tre polychrome, copi\u00e9e d\u2019apr\u00e8s un marbre antique du mus\u00e9e, dont il a restitu\u00e9 la t\u00eate enti\u00e8re avec sa chevelure, comme s\u2019il avait pour mission de retrouver l\u2019\u00e2me de l\u2019original. De la m\u00eame mani\u00e8re, le bronze romain du Mus\u00e9e arch\u00e9ologique figurant Narcisse, pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 ici avec sa copie exacte ex\u00e9cut\u00e9e par la fonderie Chiurazzi, fait face au bronze de Gemito qui a cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00ab am\u00e9liorer \u00bb l\u2019antique.<\/p>\n<p>Pour la t\u00eate du Philosophe dont il fit le premier exemplaire en 1883, Gemito a cherch\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser une t\u00eate id\u00e9ale, s\u2019inspirant \u00e0 la fois de son beau-p\u00e8re, Mastro Ciccio, et du buste dit \u00ab de S\u00e9n\u00e8que \u00bb du Mus\u00e9e national. Dans les moments o\u00f9 il reprend pied entre les crises, Gemito multiplie de fa\u00e7on obsessionnelle les repr\u00e9sentations d\u2019Alexandre le Grand, avec lequel il semble s\u2019identifier.<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est du revers de la Tasse Farn\u00e8se, conserv\u00e9e au Mus\u00e9e national, que Gemito s\u2019est inspir\u00e9 pour sa repr\u00e9sentation de la t\u00eate de M\u00e9duse, revenant par l\u2019orf\u00e8vrerie \u00e0 la tradition napolitaine de la sculpture en argent.
