Ce format est en effet tr\u00e8s adapt\u00e9 aux besoins des artisans, ma\u00eetres-orf\u00e8vres, \u00e9mailleurs ou peintres verriers, qui sont toujours \u00e0 la recherche de mod\u00e8les simples \u00e0 copier pour d\u00e9corer leur propre production. L\u2019ad\u00e9quation entre cette demande et les motifs grav\u00e9s par Delaune explique qu\u2019\u00e0 la fin du XVIe si\u00e8cle, l\u2019on retrouve ses sujets partout, de la reliure aux vitraux, en passant par le mobilier, l\u2019orf\u00e8vrerie, les revers de miroirs \u00e9maill\u00e9s ou les cam\u00e9es. Au XIXe si\u00e8cle, sa production va m\u00eame connaitre une seconde vie au travers des multiples faux et pastiches qui nourrissent le go\u00fbt des collectionneurs pour le style \u00ab Renaissance \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>Du mod\u00e8le \u00e0 l\u2019objet, de l\u2019innovation \u00e0 l\u2019arch\u00e9type, l\u2019art de Delaune a donc travers\u00e9 les si\u00e8cles et les techniques en modelant, dans son sillage, tout un pan de l\u2019art fran\u00e7ais.<\/p>\n<p>PARCOURS DE L\u2019EXPOSITION<\/p>\n<h3>1\u00e8re section : \u00c9tienne Delaune, un artiste, plusieurs vies<\/h3>\n<p>\u00c9tienne Delaune semble avoir v\u00e9cu plusieurs vies : n\u00e9 \u00e0 Milan de parents fran\u00e7ais vers 1518-1519, on le retrouve compagnon-orf\u00e8vre \u00e0 Paris en 1545, puis m\u00e9dailleur \u00e0 la Monnaie du Moulin en 1552, une activit\u00e9 qu\u2019il n\u2019exerce que quelques mois avant de revenir \u00e0 l\u2019orf\u00e8vrerie et \u00e0 la gravure d\u2019estampes. Acquis \u00e0 la R\u00e9forme, il quitte la France apr\u00e8s la Saint-Barth\u00e9lemy pour \u00e9chapper aux pers\u00e9cutions qui frappent ses co-religionnaires. Il passe ensuite dix ans entre Strasbourg et l\u2019Allemagne au gr\u00e9 des commandes qu\u2019il obtient.<br \/>\nProfitant d\u2019une parenth\u00e8se de tol\u00e9rance envers les protestants, il finit par regagner Paris o\u00f9 il meurt en 1583. Dans l\u2019atelier du ma\u00eetre-orf\u00e8vre<\/span><\/p>\n<p>A la Renaissance, les m\u00e9tiers sont gouvern\u00e9s par une r\u00e9glementation s\u00e9v\u00e8re : la cooptation y est la r\u00e8gle et il est difficile aux \u00e9trangers de d\u00e9passer le statut de \u00ab compagnon \u00bb, c\u2019est-\u00e0-dire ouvrier qualifi\u00e9. C\u2019est le cas de Delaune, qui ne devient jamais \u00ab ma\u00eetre \u00bb et ne poss\u00e8de donc pas de poin\u00e7on qui permettrait d\u2019identifier les \u0153uvres sur lesquelles il a travaill\u00e9. Le Passage \u00e0 la Monnaie du Moulin<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Le 31 janvier 1552, \u00c9tienne Delaune est nomm\u00e9 par lettres patentes d\u2019Henri II \u00e0 la Monnaie du Moulin comme graveur de coins et poin\u00e7ons. Il s\u2019agit d\u2019une entreprise nouvelle, puisque la Monnaie du Moulin vient d\u2019\u00eatre \u00e9tablie par le roi sur l\u2019ile de la Cit\u00e9 pour y frapper des m\u00e9dailles \u00e0 l\u2019aide d\u2019un balancier m\u00e9canique, une innovation technique import\u00e9e d\u2019Allemagne. Delaune n\u2019occupe cependant que six mois ses nouvelles fonctions : lui et son coll\u00e8gue Jean Erondelle sont renvoy\u00e9s le 25 juin 1552 pour cause de revendications salariales trop importantes et intentent un proc\u00e8s (perdu) \u00e0 leur successeur. Les formes, les nuances et les contrastes sont obtenus par un jeu complexe de traits et de points plus ou moins profonds, une technique n\u00e9cessitant un geste d\u2019une grande pr\u00e9cision. La plaque est ensuite encr\u00e9e et mise sous presse, ce qui permet une production abondante et relativement peu on\u00e9reuse. Delaune est l\u2019un des ma\u00eetres incontest\u00e9s de la gravure du XVIe si\u00e8cle : le format miniature de ses estampes est une prouesse technique, de m\u00eame que la subtilit\u00e9 de son trait et son \u00ab pointillisme \u00bb avant la lettre. Les estampes de Delaune sont en effet remarquablement adapt\u00e9es aux arts d\u00e9coratifs : leur petite taille \u00e9vite aux artisans des mises \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9chelle complexes et les compositions en blanc sur fond noir permettent de d\u2019isoler facilement les motifs. Les sujets repr\u00e9sent\u00e9s participent aussi de cette popularit\u00e9 car ils refl\u00e8tent les choix artistiques \u00e0 la mode.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080\">A. Chasses, Combats et Triomphes<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00c9tienne Delaune a grav\u00e9 plusieurs s\u00e9ries de format horizontal mettant en sc\u00e8ne des Chasses \u00e0 divers animaux (cerf, sanglier, oiseaux\u2026), des Combats, des Guerriers antiques et des sc\u00e8nes de Triomphes militaires. Ces th\u00e8mes renvoient \u00e0 l\u2019id\u00e9al de vie nobiliaire et constituent donc d\u2019excellents mod\u00e8les pour orner des objets pr\u00e9cieux ainsi que des d\u00e9cors mobiliers, qu\u2019ils soient \u00e0 vocation guerri\u00e8re (comme des armures ou des boucliers) ou d\u2019apparat.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080\">B. Les Mois de l\u2019ann\u00e9e<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Depuis le Moyen-\u00c2ge, on illustre le passage des saisons en repr\u00e9sentant les travaux agricoles avec la succession des signes du zodiaque. Delaune a grav\u00e9 au cours de sa carri\u00e8re deux s\u00e9ries des Mois de l\u2019ann\u00e9e, de tailles diff\u00e9rentes mais aux compositions tr\u00e8s proches. Toutes deux ont connu un grand succ\u00e8s aupr\u00e8s des artisans en raison de la possibilit\u00e9 de d\u00e9cliner leur th\u00e9matique sur des ensembles : on les retrouve ainsi reproduites sur de multiples s\u00e9ries d\u2019assiettes en \u00e9mail de Limoges, mais aussi sur des coupes en argent dor\u00e9, des vitraux civils ou des horloges.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080\">C. Sujets bibliques<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Delaune, peut-\u00eatre en raison de ses convictions protestantes, a concentr\u00e9 sa production religieuse sur l\u2019Ancien Testament : sa grande s\u00e9rie de la Gen\u00e8se constitue un sommet de son art, avec une subtilit\u00e9 dans le trac\u00e9 et des jeux de transparences qu\u2019on ne retrouve chez aucun de ses contemporains.<br \/>\nCes sc\u00e8nes histori\u00e9es aux compositions complexes se pr\u00eatent mal aux petites surfaces : elles ont donc principalement servi \u00e0 d\u00e9corer des objets de bonne taille, comme des assiettes, des fonds de coupe ou des objets de forme.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080\">D. Sujets mythologiques<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Au sein des ensembles \u00e0 th\u00e8me mythologique, les plus coh\u00e9rents datent d\u2019avant l\u2019exil de Delaune, comme le cycle de l\u2019Histoire de Diane. Les s\u00e9ries plus tardives juxtaposent des \u00e9pisodes sans lien entre eux et \u00e0 la composition assez sommaire. Ce sont cependant ces derni\u00e8res qui ont le plus \u00e9t\u00e9 utilis\u00e9es par les artisans comme mod\u00e8les : leur simplicit\u00e9 m\u00eame les rend plus facilement traduisibles en d\u00e9cor \u00e9maill\u00e9 ou grav\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080\">E. Sujets all\u00e9goriques<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Les Quatre El\u00e9ments ou les Arts Lib\u00e9raux constituent des sujets d\u00e9coratifs de choix : ils permettent de d\u00e9cliner une m\u00eame th\u00e9matique sur plusieurs objets ou plusieurs faces d\u2019un m\u00eame objet, comme les parois d\u2019une horloge ou les vantaux d\u2019un meuble. Delaune n\u2019est pas n\u00e9cessairement la seule source d\u2019inspiration : les artisans disposent d\u2019un r\u00e9pertoire de mod\u00e8les grav\u00e9s de plusieurs auteurs, qu\u2019ils associent entre eux au gr\u00e9 des commandes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #008080\">F. Grotesques<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Les grotesques constituent le motif ornemental par excellence. Etienne Delaune en a grav\u00e9 un nombre tr\u00e8s \u00e9lev\u00e9 au cours de sa carri\u00e8re, au point que ces figures sont l\u2019image qu\u2019on associe le plus directement \u00e0 son nom. Il s\u2019agit de petits modules que l\u2019on peut d\u00e9cliner sur tout type de surface, sans contrainte narrative, ce qui en fait une source d\u2019inspiration id\u00e9ale pour les arts d\u00e9coratifs. De tous les mod\u00e8les de Delaune, c\u2019est sans doute ceux qui ont connu la fortune la plus importante et que l\u2019on retrouve sur tout type de support, du plus petit au plus monumental.<\/p>\n<h3>Conclusion : Delaune apr\u00e8s Delaune<\/h3>\n<p>En ayant laiss\u00e9 une telle marque sur les arts d\u00e9coratifs de la Renaissance, il n\u2019est gu\u00e8re \u00e9tonnant que Delaune ait aussi nourri l\u2019imagination du XIXe si\u00e8cle. Les m\u00eames caract\u00e9ristiques techniques qui rendaient ses estampes si ais\u00e9ment exploitables pour des artisans de la Renaissance ont \u00e9t\u00e9 mises \u00e0 profit pour cr\u00e9er nombre de faux, notamment en orf\u00e8vrerie. Delaune aura donc si bien incarn\u00e9 l\u2019esprit du XVIe si\u00e8cle fran\u00e7ais que les faussaires se sont naturellement tourn\u00e9s vers ses mod\u00e8les pour \u00ab faire vrai \u00bb.
