(\u00a9 Bibiliothe\u0300que nationale de France, de\u0301partement des Manuscrits)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Au sein de cette famille aux membres aussi innombrables que diversifi\u00e9s se d\u00e9tache un petit groupe de coffrets \u2013 \u00e0 peine cent quarante \u2013, aux caract\u00e9ristiques singuli\u00e8res. Bard\u00e9s de fer et couverts de cuir, ils ont un coussin clou\u00e9 sur leur fond, des passants sur le c\u00f4t\u00e9 pour une bandouli\u00e8re, une serrure \u00e0 m\u00e9canisme secret et, pour la moiti\u00e9 d\u2019entre eux, un compartiment secret de faible profondeur, am\u00e9nag\u00e9 dans leur couvercle et scell\u00e9 d\u00e9finitivement. Ils s\u2019ouvrent sur le petit c\u00f4t\u00e9 et r\u00e9v\u00e8lent alors une estampe colori\u00e9e, coll\u00e9e au revers de leur couvercle. Appartiennent aussi \u00e0 cet ensemble des estampes aujourd\u2019hui conserv\u00e9es en feuille, mais qui, pour certaines du moins, proviennent assur\u00e9ment de coffrets. Ces estampes pr\u00e9sentent chacune un \u00e9pisode de la Passion. Elles offrent en effet un format ainsi qu\u2019un agencement de l\u2019image et du texte identiques. Les saints mis \u00e0 l\u2019honneur sont tous tr\u00e8s populaires \u00e0 la fin du Moyen \u00c2ge et appartiennent \u00e0 un r\u00e9pertoire hagiographique commun \u00e0 l\u2019Europe m\u00e9di\u00e9vale. Il a longtemps \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9sign\u00e9 sous des noms de convention, forg\u00e9s d\u2019apr\u00e8s ses \u0153uvres les plus embl\u00e9matiques : Ma\u00eetre des Tr\u00e8s Petites Heures d\u2019Anne de Bretagne, d\u2019apr\u00e8s le manuscrit command\u00e9 par la reine de France, Ma\u00eetre de la rose de l\u2019Apocalypse, d\u2019apr\u00e8s la verri\u00e8re de la Sainte Chapelle de Paris, Ma\u00eetre de la Vie de saint Jean Baptiste, d\u2019apr\u00e8s des vitraux rouennais, Ma\u00eetre de la Chasse \u00e0 la licorne, d\u2019apr\u00e8s la tapisserie conserv\u00e9e aux Cloisters \u00e0 New York. La d\u00e9couverte de documents d\u2019archives a permis de rapprocher ce corpus de la personnalit\u00e9 de Jean d\u2019Ypres, artiste issu d\u2019une dynastie de peintres originaires du Nord de la France. Il est lui-m\u00eame \u00e9lu \u00abgarde du m\u00e9tier de peintre \u00bb &#8211; une fonction \u00e9minente au sein de la corporation des peintres parisiens &#8211; en 1504 et meurt vers 1508.<\/p>\n<p>Peu d\u2019\u0153uvres de sa main sont conserv\u00e9es et les Tr\u00e8s Petites Heures d\u2019Anne de Bretagne, \u0153uvre singuli\u00e8re tant ses dimensions sont r\u00e9duites, constitue l\u2019un des rares vestiges de sa production personnelle. \u00c0 l\u2019inverse, les r\u00e9alisations d\u2019apr\u00e8s ses mod\u00e8les nous sont parvenues en nombre. Jean d\u2019Ypres fournit quantit\u00e9 de mod\u00e8les dessin\u00e9s aux ateliers parisiens, qui furent ensuite transpos\u00e9s en vitraux, en tapisseries et en gravures. La c\u00e9l\u00e8bre tenture La Dame \u00e0 la licorne fut tiss\u00e9e d\u2019apr\u00e8s ses dessins.<\/p>\n<p>Dans sa formation artistique, Jean d\u2019Ypres b\u00e9n\u00e9ficia de l\u2019h\u00e9ritage re\u00e7u de son p\u00e8re, Colin d\u2019Amiens qui fut lui aussi, en son temps, un peintre reconnu. La mise en regard des petits patrons de la Guerre de Troie de Colin d\u2019Amiens avec les vitraux et estampes r\u00e9alis\u00e9s d\u2019apr\u00e8s Jean d\u2019Ypres met en \u00e9vidence la communaut\u00e9 de style des deux artistes.<\/p>\n<p>LA DIFFUSION DU STYLE DE JEAN D\u2019YPRES<\/p>\n<p>Les estampes grav\u00e9es sur bois ou sur cuivre d\u2019apr\u00e8s des compositions de Jean d\u2019Ypres sont nombreuses et tr\u00e8s vari\u00e9es. Elles ont essentiellement consist\u00e9 en des s\u00e9ries d\u2019illustrations pour des livres d\u2019heures imprim\u00e9s \u00e0 Paris par les grands \u00e9diteurs de l\u2019\u00e9poque, mais l\u2019artiste a aussi donn\u00e9 des sujets pour d\u2019autres textes d\u00e9votionnels ou litt\u00e9raires.<\/p>\n<p>On estime aujourd\u2019hui sa production pour les livres \u00e0 pr\u00e8s de 650 estampes pour 19 titres diff\u00e9rents, ce qui t\u00e9moigne de l\u2019ampleur que prit cet aspect dans son travail. \u00c0 cela s\u2019ajoute son activit\u00e9 de dessinateur pour les marques d\u2019imprimeurs-libraires, images imprim\u00e9es au d\u00e9but ou \u00e0 la fin des livres qui permettaient \u00e0 chaque imprimeur ou vendeur d\u2019affirmer sa propri\u00e9t\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>De fait, gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 l\u2019image imprim\u00e9e, qu\u2019elle soit dans des ouvrages ou en feuille comme dans des coffrets, le style de Jean d\u2019Ypres a pu se diffuser largement, \u00e0 Paris tout d\u2019abord, en Normandie \u00e9galement, gr\u00e2ce au relais de certains acteurs du monde du livre, tels Jean Richard ou Thielman Kerver. Ses estampes continu\u00e8rent d\u2019\u00eatre publi\u00e9es bien au-del\u00e0 de sa mort, parfois jusque dans les ann\u00e9es 1520. On peut donc consid\u00e9rer sans exag\u00e9ration que le style de Jean d\u2019Ypres a rayonn\u00e9 en France et en Europe pendant pr\u00e8s d\u2019une g\u00e9n\u00e9ration.<\/p>\n<p>Ces estampes servirent de mod\u00e8les pour des r\u00e9alisations vari\u00e9es : les objets en ivoires pr\u00e9sent\u00e9s en sont d\u2019excellents exemples, mais des recherches r\u00e9centes montrent que des \u00e9mailleurs se sont \u00e9galement inspir\u00e9s des compositions de l\u2019artiste.<\/p>\n<p>LES USAGES DES COFFRETS \u00c0 ESTAMPE<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019usage exact de ces coffrets demeure inconnu, faute de source \u00e9crite ou figur\u00e9e. Ils peuvent \u00eatre transport\u00e9s gr\u00e2ce aux passants pour une bandouli\u00e8re et au coussin de leur fond mais sont bien trop fragiles pour servir de bagage \u00e0 un p\u00e8lerin. La logette de leur couvercle ne saurait servir \u00e0 entreposer un sauf-conduit ou une missive pour un messager, le compartiment secret \u00e9tant clos une fois pour toutes pour devenir ind\u00e9celable et inviolable. Quant aux bo\u00eetes de messager, connues aussi bien par des exemplaires conserv\u00e9s que par des repr\u00e9sentations, elles n\u2019ont rien en commun avec les coffrets \u00e0 estampe.<\/p>\n<p>La Fuite en \u00c9gypte d\u2019un peintre anversois des ann\u00e9es 1540 aurait pu \u00eatre la seule source iconographique s\u2019il s\u2019\u00e9tait bien agi d\u2019un coffret \u00e0 estampe, mais l\u2019observateur attentif remarquera que la serrure comme la forme du couvercle ne correspondent pas \u00e0 la morphologie des exemplaires conserv\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Il en est de m\u00eame du coffret repr\u00e9sent\u00e9 au dessus du proph\u00e8te J\u00e9r\u00e9mie du retable de Barth\u00e9l\u00e9my d\u2019Eyck, sur une \u00e9tag\u00e8re satur\u00e9e de livres et de papiers. Probablement est-ce pourtant la sph\u00e8re dans laquelle il est loisible d\u2019imaginer ces coffrets, dont l\u2019ouverture sur le petit c\u00f4t\u00e9 et l\u2019invariant rapport de 3\/2 de leur caisse, proportion universelle du codex, s\u2019accorderait avec un livre, avec une fonction de d\u00e9votion confi\u00e9e \u00e0 l\u2019estampe. Le contenu de la logette demeure inconnu, mais il devait \u00eatre identifiable et pris\u00e9, au moins encore au 17e si\u00e8cle, puisqu\u2019aucune n\u2019est parvenue inviol\u00e9e jusqu\u2019\u00e0 nous.
