Les architectes du roi, en particulier Ange Jacques Gabriel, proposent sans rel\u00e2che des plans d\u2019agrandissement spectaculaires. Elle se focalise sur la question de l\u2019\u00abEnveloppe \u00bb du ch\u00e2teau et surtout de la fa\u00e7ade du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la ville, qui fait l\u2019objet de centaines de propositions. Sa construction fut pourtant un long processus, fait d\u2019h\u00e9sitations, de r\u00e9alisations partielles, de projets entrepris et abandonn\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>Louis XIV v\u00e9cut \u00e0 Versailles dans un chantier permanent. Louis XV h\u00e9rita d\u2019un palais fragile qu\u2019il fallait moderniser. Louis XVI souhaita lui rendre la majest\u00e9 et l\u2019harmonie perdues. Napol\u00e9on envisagea de s\u2019y installer, au prix d\u2019une transformation radicale. Ces revirements s\u2019expliquent par l\u2019absence d\u2019un programme g\u00e9n\u00e9ral dictant les am\u00e9nagements, mais \u00e9galement par l\u2019\u00e9volution des usages du ch\u00e2teau. Elle fut pr\u00e9c\u00e9d\u00e9e de plusieurs projets et \u00e9difices, qui furent autant d\u2019\u00e9tapes dans l\u2019\u00e9laboration de la formule finalement adopt\u00e9e. En 1670, lors de la cr\u00e9ation de l\u2019Enveloppe, on d\u00e9pla\u00e7a le sanctuaire au Sud, \u00e0 l\u2019emplacement de l\u2019actuelle salle des Gardes de la Reine. En 1672, une troisi\u00e8me chapelle, dont Charles Le Brun con\u00e7u le d\u00e9cor, fut projet\u00e9e \u00e0 proximit\u00e9 des appartements des souverains, dans l\u2019actuelle salle du Sacre. Le chantier fut interrompu par la perspective de l\u2019installation de la cour \u00e0 Versailles, contraignant la chapelle \u00e0 une nouvelle errance.<\/p>\n<p>Apr\u00e8s plusieurs emplacements provisoires, on envisagea en 1684 de construire un nouveau sanctuaire dans l\u2019aile Nord. La quantit\u00e9 et la vari\u00e9t\u00e9 des salles r\u00e9alis\u00e9es ou simplement projet\u00e9es depuis le r\u00e8gne de Louis XIV montrent que cette solution ne fut jamais trouv\u00e9e : la cour s\u2019accommodait parfaitement d\u2019installations \u00e9ph\u00e9m\u00e8res.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000\">Architectures de jardin<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Les jardins de Versailles firent l\u2019objet de nombreux projets de bosquets mais aussi de constructions; si certains virent le jour, d\u2019autres ne se r\u00e9alis\u00e8rent que sur le papier. Bien loin de simples petites \u00ab fabriques \u00bb de jardin, ils auraient compos\u00e9 de v\u00e9ritables \u00abmorceaux d\u2019architecture \u00bb en contrepoint du ch\u00e2teau lui-m\u00eame.<\/p>\n<p>En 1670, le peintre Charles Le Brun, actif pour les d\u00e9cors du ch\u00e2teau comme pour les mod\u00e8les de statues du parc, con\u00e7ut un long mur en fer \u00e0 cheval autour du bassin de Latone, situ\u00e9 en contrebas du Parterre d\u2019Eau. Dix-sept niches devaient accueillir des statues de dieux et d\u2019all\u00e9gories compl\u00e9tant l\u2019histoire de la m\u00e8re d\u2019Apollon et de Diane.<\/p>\n<p>Vers 1680, alors que l\u2019architecture devenait de plus en plus pr\u00e9sente dans les jardins, un amateur pr\u00e9senta au roi le projet d\u2019un gigantesque \u00abPalais des Muses \u00bb, \u00e0 l\u2019extr\u00e9mit\u00e9 de la Pi\u00e8ce d\u2019eau des Suisses.<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 la fin du r\u00e8gne de Louis XIV, l\u2019architecte su\u00e9dois Nicod\u00e8me Tessin con\u00e7ut plusieurs dessins pour un pavillon d\u2019Apollon \u00e0 l\u2019extr\u00eamit\u00e9 du Grand Canal. \u00c0 la fois biblioth\u00e8que et mus\u00e9e, il aurait mesur\u00e9 l\u2019\u00e9quivalent de la fa\u00e7ade du corps central du ch\u00e2teau\u2026<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000\">Le \u00abGrand Projet\u00bb d\u2019Ange-Jacques Gabriel<\/span><\/p>\n<p>En 1715, la mort de Louis XIV entra\u00eene l\u2019installation de la cour \u00e0 Paris. Pour la premi\u00e8re fois depuis 1661, les travaux de Versailles sont interrompus.<\/p>\n<p>En 1722, le jeune Louis XV annonce son retour dans le ch\u00e2teau de son a\u00efeul. Il y entreprend de nombreux travaux, conduits sous l\u2019autorit\u00e9 des Premiers architectes Robert de Cotte, Jacques V Gabriel, et surtout son fils, Ange-Jacques Gabriel, auteur du Petit Trianon (1762- 1769) et de l\u2019Op\u00e9ra royal (1763-1770).<\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 partir de 1742, Ange-Jacques Gabriel reprend le \u00abGrand Dessein\u00bb de Jules Hardouin-Mansart. Pendant plus de vingt ans, l\u2019architecte multiplie les propositions pour redonner majest\u00e9 et monumentalit\u00e9 aux fa\u00e7ades sur la ville. Inlassablement pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 au roi, son \u00abGrand Projet \u00bb n\u2019est finalement accept\u00e9 qu\u2019en 1771.<\/p>\n<p>Le chantier conna\u00eet un spectaculaire d\u00e9but de r\u00e9alisation avec la reconstruction de l\u2019aile du Gouvernement qui mena\u00e7ait ruine. Mais \u00e0 la mort de Louis XV, les travaux sont interrompus. Seule l\u2019aile Neuve (aujourd\u2019hui aile Gabriel) est construite. La fa\u00e7ade du ch\u00e2teau pr\u00e9sente alors un aspect inabouti, h\u00e9t\u00e9roclite et d\u00e9s\u00e9quilibr\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000\">Le concours de 1780-1781<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00c0 son av\u00e8nement en 1774, Louis XVI h\u00e9rite d\u2019un palais h\u00e9t\u00e9roclite. Les fa\u00e7ades du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de la place d\u2019Armes forment un ensemble asym\u00e9trique et les espaces int\u00e9rieurs sont devenus trop exigus et peu adapt\u00e9s au mode de vie des souverains.<\/p>\n<p>La n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 d\u2019entreprendre des travaux s\u2019impose. Le roi et son directeur des B\u00e2timents, le comte d\u2019Angiviller, lancent en 1780 un appel \u00e0 id\u00e9es pour la reconstruction du ch\u00e2teau. Les propositions doivent r\u00e9pondre aux probl\u00e8mes existants mais aussi se conformer au programme des palais du XVIIIe si\u00e8cle : adapter la distribution int\u00e9rieure pour associer les fonctions d\u2019habitation, de repr\u00e9sentation, de r\u00e9ception et d\u2019exercice du pouvoir; sc\u00e9nariser l\u2019espace urbain alentour; constituer une vitrine des arts fran\u00e7ais.<\/p>\n<p>Huit architectes participent \u00e0 ce concours. Six propositions sont conserv\u00e9es. Tr\u00e8s diverses, elles peuvent \u00eatre class\u00e9es en deux cat\u00e9gories: r\u00e9alistes et utopiques. Les r\u00e9ponses r\u00e9alistes de Jean-Fran\u00e7ois Heurtier et de Pierre Adrien P\u00e2ris conservent l\u2019\u0153uvre de Louis XIV en la modernisant dans un souci de rationalit\u00e9 \u00e9conomique et de respect des usages. Les dessins d\u2019\u00c9tienne Louis Boull\u00e9e, des fr\u00e8res Peyre et d\u2019Antoine Leroy sont autant de propositions utopiques, voire fantaisistes.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #800000\">Versailles sous l\u2019Empire: les projets de Napol\u00e9on<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Le 6 octobre 1789, la famille royale quitte d\u00e9finitivement Versailles. Transform\u00e9 en d\u00e9p\u00f4t d\u2019\u0153uvres d\u2019art, en biblioth\u00e8que et en \u00e9coles, le ch\u00e2teau \u00e9chappe aux destructions de la R\u00e9volution fran\u00e7aise. \u00c0 l\u2019av\u00e8nement de l\u2019Empire, le palais a perdu de son lustre : outre le d\u00e9s\u00e9quilibre de ses fa\u00e7ades sur la ville, plusieurs ann\u00e9es d\u2019abandon lui donnent un air d\u00e9sol\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>En 1806, Napol\u00e9on songe \u00e0 s\u2019y installer. Il demande \u00e0 l\u2019architecte Jacques Gondoin de lui pr\u00e9senter des projets mais aucun n\u2019est finalement adopt\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>En 1810, \u00e0 l\u2019annonce du mariage de l\u2019Empereur avec Marie-Louise de Habsbourg-Lorraine, petite-ni\u00e8ce de Marie-Antoinette, le projet de r\u00e9occupation de Versailles est \u00e0 nouveau d\u2019actualit\u00e9. Napol\u00e9on envisage d\u2019en faire un Palais imp\u00e9rial. Il confie \u00e0 son Premier architecte, Pierre Fontaine, la mission de repenser les distributions int\u00e9rieures et, surtout, de \u00ab trouver le moyen de faire du c\u00f4t\u00e9 de Paris une fa\u00e7ade aussi vaste et belle que celle des jardins \u00bb (Fontaine, Journal).
