L\u2019artiste s&rsquo;attache \u00e0 en reproduire ou \u00e0 en interpr\u00e9ter les traits et expressions caract\u00e9ristiques. Cependant, un portrait n\u2019est pas n\u00e9cessairement totalement fid\u00e8le \u00e0 la r\u00e9alit\u00e9. Il peut \u00eatre id\u00e9alis\u00e9 afin de valoriser le mod\u00e8le.<\/p>\n<p>Un portrait comme un autoportrait peut \u00eatre peint, sculpt\u00e9, grav\u00e9, photographi\u00e9 ou \u00e9crit. Il peut \u00eatre r\u00e9alis\u00e9 pour des raisons politiques, sociales ou personnelles, et questionne le r\u00f4le de l\u2019image et de la repr\u00e9sentation. Au XIVe si\u00e8cle, les peintres italiens, comme Giotto di Bondone, commencent \u00e0 individualiser leurs personnages. Progressivement, les commanditaires des \u0153uvres religieuses apparaissent dans les compositions. Mais ce n\u2019est qu\u2019au d\u00e9but du XVe si\u00e8cle que le portrait s&rsquo;\u00e9rige en genre autonome. Il se d\u00e9veloppe principalement \u00e0 Florence et en Flandres.<\/p>\n<p>En Italie, les personnalit\u00e9s sont le plus souvent peintes en buste. Le fond \u00e9volue rapidement : d\u2019abord neutre ou d\u00e9coratif, dans la tradition gothique, il repr\u00e9sente ensuite un int\u00e9rieur ou encore un paysage. De leur c\u00f4t\u00e9, les primitifs flamands peignent leurs sujets avec un grand r\u00e9alisme. Car cet art se transforme, \u00e0 cette \u00e9poque, essentiellement en art de cour. De grands peintres le pratiquent, sans toutefois s\u2019y consacrer exclusivement. D\u2019autres en font leur sp\u00e9cialit\u00e9, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 devenir parfois \u00ab peintre du roi \u00bb. Au XVIIe si\u00e8cle, Petrus Paulus Rubens et surtout Antoon Van Dyck, en Angleterre, r\u00e9novent les formules du portrait du prince. Ils lui apportent une vivacit\u00e9 parfois absente des tableaux d\u2019apparat. La pose se diversifie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">L\u2019ensemble de la composition concourt \u00e0 mettre en valeur les qualit\u00e9s du monarque. En Angleterre, l\u2019engouement pour le portrait se renforce au point que les riches marchands n\u2019h\u00e9sitent plus \u00e0 en commander. Si les grands continuent \u00e0 commander leur portrait, l\u2019intimit\u00e9, la sensibilit\u00e9 gagnent leurs lettres de noblesse. Les repr\u00e9sentations de la famille et de l\u2019enfance se multiplient. La repr\u00e9sentation des gens de th\u00e9\u00e2tre devient aussi un th\u00e8me de pr\u00e9dilection. Une approche plus psychologique des individus voit \u00e9galement le jour.<\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\">Aux c\u00f4t\u00e9s de la peinture, la mode du portrait au pastel conna\u00eet un essor sans pr\u00e9c\u00e9dent, sous l\u2019influence de Quentin de La Tour. Le portrait \u00e0 l&rsquo;huile conna\u00eet un succ\u00e8s jamais atteint et les formats s\u2019agrandissent. Mais la r\u00e9volution picturale que voit na\u00eetre la fin de ce si\u00e8cle modifie \u00e9galement l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat et la nature m\u00eame du genre. Si les artistes continuent \u00e0 r\u00e9aliser des portraits, l\u2019objectif s\u2019est d\u00e9plac\u00e9. Le genre devient un pr\u00e9texte, un moyen comme un autre de d\u00e9terminer l\u2019attitude du peintre vis-\u00e0-vis du monde r\u00e9el, de la soci\u00e9t\u00e9 et de l&rsquo;art.
