Omar Khayyām or Khayyām in Nichapur in Persia (now Iran) is a Persian poet and scholar. His name is spelled Omar Khayam in the translations of Armand Robin (1958) or M. F. Farzaneh and Jean Malaplate (in the critical edition of Sadegh Hedayat, Corti, 1993). His date of birth is assumed. His poems are mostly written in Persian while his scientific treatises are in Arabic.
Khayyam's life is shrouded in mystery, and the scarcity of available sources prevents it from being accurately traced. Scholars generally believe that Omar Khayyam was born into a family of craftsmen in Nichapur (Khayyam's name suggests his father was a tentmaker). He spent his childhood in the city of Balhi, where he studied under Sheikh Mohammad Mansuri, one of the most famous scholars of his time (according to Vizier Nizam al-Mulk in his "wasiyat", his will). In his youth, Omar Khayyām also studied under Imam Mowaffak of Nishapur, considered the best teacher in Khorassan.
In 1074, he was invited by the Seljuk sultan Mālikshāh Jalāl al-Dīn to Isfahan to undertake the reform of the solar calendar to which he devoted five years, and to organize astronomical observations. When Mālikshāh died, he fell into disgrace. It is possible that some of his unorthodox poems are the cause. To put an end to all suspicion, he then undertakes a pilgrimage to Mecca. We then find him in Merv, then capital of the Seljuk Empire. He ended his days in Nichapur, where he lived as a recluse for the last twenty years of his life.
