"18th Century Mantel Clock Louis XV Period By Moutiguij In Moudidier"
Portico clock Louis XVI Pendulum called "portico" in white and gilded bronze. The enamel dial, comprising Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes, is surrounded by a finely chiselled and gilded frieze, surmounted by a flowery urn on a white marble base and ends with a large base composed of a lamp. of two natural vines joined by a ribbon, including buds, flowers, foliage and bunches of grapes, and in its center a wreath of flowers surmounted by foliage. This dial rests on two white marble columns, each framed by two baluster-shaped gilt bronze columns, surmounted by two finely chiseled and gilt bronze urns. They rest on black marble and white marble pedestals, all enriched with friezes of gilded bronze beads and receive a fall of trophies comprising two lyres and two quivers within flowers and foliage and fruit in ribbons. The terrace with white marble steps is decorated with friezes... The "portico" or "portico" clock was invented during the Louis XVI era, as were an unrivaled variety of other designs. The gantry model will meet with immense success and will experience a wide variety of variants. It is still a real small architecture in reduction, including columns, consoles, urns, and an ornamental repertoire borrowed from architecture. This architectural inspiration is governed by neoclassicism and "Greek taste" drawing its references from the discoveries of the archaeological sites of Herculaneum and Pompeii. This clock is perfectly representative of the portico clock as it was appreciated at the time of Louis XVI. The marble columns, the bases, the stepped terrace, the ornamental repertoire borrow from architecture. The use of white and black marble, urns and trophies refer to Antiquity, while the rich use of chiseled and gilded bronze with Ormoulu shows and recalls the precious character of the piece.
