Object description :

"2 Large Photos Of Bordeaux Before 1863"
These two large photos of Bordeaux taken from the Saint-Michel tower date from before 1863. They measure 41.5 cm wide by 15 cm high, and with the cardboard where they are fixed 63 cm by 47.5 cm. The Sainte-Marie church, whose construction by the architect Abadie started in 1863, is not visible on the photograph taken towards the Bastide, proof therefore that the photo is prior to this date, but we can also see the footbridge of the railroad which was completed in 1860, our photos were therefore taken between 1860 and 1863. Each photo is made up of two shots to make a success of the panoramic, they are fixed on a strong blue cardboard of origin with the title on the bottom of the photos . These two prints come from an old background from the Manufacture Jules Vieillard in Bordeaux, they bear on the back the traces of a stamp in blue ink with the marks of the Manufacture. JulesVieillard was a passionate photographer and it would not be surprising if these photos were by his hand. Moreover, you can perfectly see the many sailboats anchored on the Garonne, witnesses of the intense activity of the port at that time, as well as many monuments and buildings still existing or missing.
