Eugène Prévost, best known by the pseudonym Eugène Messemin, born December 8, 1880 in the town of La Chapelle-Saint-Mesmin (Loiret) and died December 23, 1944 in Paris, was a theater decorator, a French painter and illustrator. He is the father of the painter Madeleine Prévost (1915-2012), the stepfather of the sculptor Marcel Gili (1914-1993) and the grandfather of the writer Alain Gili (born in 1946). Between 1905 and 1935, he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants, but also at the Salon des artistes français. According to Jean-Michel Roudier, heritage curator, in 1997, the pictorial art of Messemin was influenced by the Nabis, the Pont-Aven school and Japanism. He also considers that: “Eugène Prévost, the Parisian and Eugène Messemin, the Loire, constitute two distinct personalities, split as much by their surname as by their activity. Between these two facets, the break is clear, even if a story of images and brushes unites these two false twins: a worldly career and a landscape recreation”.
