This beautiful painting, characterized by an ethereal halo of sacredness, immortalizes the face of the Archangel Gabriel in the foreground during the Annunciation to the Virgin while with one hand he is about to offer her the white lilies, a symbol of purity and chastity.

Certainly worthy of a more in-depth study, which specifically identifies its authorship, the stylistic characteristics of the painting show its belonging to the Roman figurative culture of the full seventeenth century, distinct from that variegated and international artistic environment, from which an educated expressive grace stands out. typical of the Roman Baroque.

In detail, the juxtaposition of the numerous angel figures produced by Pietro da Cortona, one of the interpreters of the Baroque school, whose thriving workshop was able to give, without exaggeration, a spectacular and pompous style is evident.

The theme of the angel is frequent in the author, who intends in this way to strengthen its presence, as the guardian of our salvation. Our author must certainly have seen and drawn inspiration from Cortonesque models, from the monumental altarpieces and frescoes, always studded with angels, which Cortona created on numerous occasions, for example see the angel of the altar of the Church of S . Francesco, in Tuscany, in Cortona (

The painting presents itself with a refined style, managing to calibrate the taste of classicism with a baroque without excesses. His creations constituted an absolute reference model, a paradigm of a balanced but surprising pictorial style in every component (design, color, composition, iconography), making it an undisputed reference point of the Roman art scene, as well as a source of inspiration for the European classicism.

The conservation conditions of the work appear excellent, perfectly restored.
