"Mythological Painting After Correggio Italian School Early XIXth Century H/t"
According to Correggio Mythological Painting Italian School early 19th century H/T Mythological painting representing two putti. From an original by Correggio of 1531, commissioned by the Duke of Mantua, as part of a series depicting the loves of Jupiter. The painting depicts the Greek mythological figure Danae, daughter of Acrisios, king of Argos. An oracle having predicted that Acrisios would be killed by the son of Danae, he had imprisoned his daughter in a bronze tower. However, according to the Roman poet Ovid, in his Metamorphoses, Jupiter came to her in the form of a golden rain and made her the mother of Perseus. Correggio depicts Danae lying on a bed, while an Eros child undresses her under golden showers from a cloud. At the foot of the bed, two putti are testing whether it is indeed gold. Good quality of execution. Italian school from the end of the 18th century - beginning of the 19th century. Oil on canvas. Relined. A few tweaks to non-characters. Chassis dimensions: 74 x 61.5 cm
