"The Spinner Of Penhars - Manufacture Porquier Beau - Brittany - XIXth"
Manufacture Porquier Beau, polychrome earthenware. Around 1890. Signed PB on the back and marked Penhars.Alfred Beau (1829-1907): his name is inseparable from the history of Quimper earthenware. Photographer by profession, Alfred Beau has put his talents as a painter and draftsman at the service of ceramics. As a result, the tableware has delighted art lovers and conquered museums. Alfred Beau has an innate artistic sense. Photography does not allow him to give the full measure of his talents. An activity appealing more to his sensitivity would suit him better. It was the Eloury factory, run since 1869 by the widow of Adolphe Porquier that gave him his chance. Alfred Beau enters the business in his own name and settles with his wife in Quimper. From this association was born an artistic earthenware workshop, the first of its kind.
