Beautiful Venetian canvas from the mid-16th century representing Saint Jerome meditating in the desert. This extraordinary character, extremely fascinating and one of the 4 Fathers of the Church, aroused the interest of all the great masters of ancient painting who described him in different versions but always charged with the greatest sacredness, figure hieratic par excellence. The Saint is represented, according to tradition, naked and slightly in profile, his gaze turned towards the Crucifix, his left hand on his chest and the right on the open book of the Holy Scriptures. Against the background of the landscape, we can make out the silhouette of a lion, its essential iconographic attribute. Behind him hangs the cardinal's red hat. The painting is in good condition and comes with a beautiful antique lacquered box frame with gold trim.
