"J. Meissonier (1864-1943), The Pea Picker, Oil On Panel Signed On The Right, Golden Frame"
J Joseph Meissonnier (1864-1943) is a Provencal painter, native of Avignon who was a pupil of Pierre Grivolas, Eugène Dufour and Paul Sain. Born in Avignon in 1864, this painter was part of the "Group of Thirteen" created in 1912 by Clément Brun where he befriended Joseph Hurard. He participated in a first exhibition in 1912 which was a great success, followed by a second exhibition in 1913 which was also the last of the Group. Here he does a superb job of finesse, elegance and freshness in the production of this pea harvester. Its pendant, the tomato picker is exhibited at the Museum of Avignon. Joseph Meissonier is exhibited in many museums, in particular in his native Provence, which he paints with great poetry. He died in Avignon in 1943.
