"Fireback With The Arms Of Louis I From La Tour Du Pin Gouvernet (79x73 Cm)"
Fireback from the 17th or 18th century, cast after 1684, with the arms of Louis I de La Tour du Pin Gouvernet, marquis de la Charce (1655-1714), surviving family of the French nobility originally from Vienne in Isère since the XIth century. Several branches among others descend from it: from Vinay, from Clelles, from Gouvernet, from Montauban, from Verclause, from La Charce de Chambly and from Forez. Our plate was found in Sacquenay near Fontaine-Française in Côte d'Or. Seigniory attested since the Middle Ages and which entered this Dauphinois house by the marriage in 1684, of the niece of the last owner in date, Claude de Mazel with Louis I de la Tour du Pin Gouvernet. On the basis of a 13th century fortified castle, a major transformation will be carried out around 1540-1550 by Claude de Longwy and, relieved of its status as a frontier place after the Treaty of Nijmegen in 1678, became a pleasure residence. In 1754 François David Bollioud, lord of Saint Julien, married in 1748 in Fontaine-Française with Anne de La Tour du Pin de La Charce, under the guidance of the Parisian architect Souhard, transformed the old fortified castle into a more comfortable residence for classic style. The castle, the outbuildings and the gardens were classified as historic monuments in November 1945. François I stayed there twice in January 1534 and September 1535. Henri IV slept there after the victorious battle of Fontaine-Française in 1595. Madame de Saint- Julien received there Voltaire, Madame de Staël and many brilliant minds. Our plate on which the coat of arms is quartered with the arms of Dauphiné, Navarre, Montauban and Béarn, bringing together the different alliances, on which are the arms of La Tour du Pin, is strewn with dolphins, helmets and towers under a drape. An inscription "L and I" at the top of the plaque, for Louis I de La Tour du Pin. Coat of arms: 1 d'or with dauphin d'azur (Dauphiné), 2 d'gules with rais d'carbuncle pommeté d'or (Navarre), 3 d'azur with three towers d'or (Montauban) in 4 d gold with two cows passing gules, side by side, gored and clarinated, placed one on the other (Béarn). Over all Azure a tower Argent a chief sewn Gules, charged with three closed helmets Or tarred in profile (La Tour du Pin). Supporters: 2 crowned griffins Ducal crown. Crest: the spread eagle of the Empire. Its weight is 106 kg. Thanks to Mrs. Christine Chazeau for her research and her pugnacity. You can visit our website: www.claudeaugustin.com
