"Bust Of Plato Dionysus Naples 19th Century "
Green patinated bronze on the original marble base
around 1860 / Italy / Naples.
The identity of the depiction is unclear at this time. Archaeologists attribute it to the mythological figures of philosopher Plato or Dionysus.
The Swiss archaeologist Karl Weber discovered this representation around 1750 during his excavations at the Villa dei Papiri, near Herculaneum in the Gulf of Naples.
During these excavations, many busts from the Hellenic period were discovered. In the second half of the 19th century, a few foundries from which he obtained permission from the National Museum of Naples to melt copies of these busts.
This bust is from the foundry "G. Sommer & Figlio Largo Vittoria Palazzo Sommer NAPOLI The bust of philosopher Plato or Dionysos can be found in the catalog of the Fonderia Artistica -Industriale G. Sommer & Figlio on page 2 and 3, number 18 as a bust of Platone with three patinas 1.Moderna 2. Ercolano 3. Pompei
