"The Chariot Of Love - Empire Bronze Clock - Jean Simon Deverberie"
Jean-Simon Deverberie (1764-1824). Rare mantel clock called "the chariot of Love" in very finely chiseled, gilded and patinated bronze.
In a case designed by the famous bronzier Jean-Simon Deverberie.
Paris, Empire period, around 1810.
Superb composition presenting a love, standing on his chariot, guiding two spirited horses in patinated bronze. The eyes of the character and the horses in enamel.
The "skeleton" movement with its partially enamelled annular dial is inscribed in the wheel of the chariot, revealing the cogs in action. Reinforced at the back by a superb dragon spitting flames.
Rectangular base decorated with bas-reliefs of Cupids, quivers and torches. Lion claw feet.
Original 8-day movement with anchor escapement and silk suspension balance, strike every half hour on the brass gong, blued steel Breguet hands. Overhauled by a specialist watchmaker, in perfect working order.
Dimensions: L 48.5 x H 39 x D14.5 cm
Model listed in various specialized dictionaries.
A similar model is kept at the François Duesberg Museum in Mons (François Duesberg Museum, Decorative Arts 1775-1825, Brussels, 2004, p.38).
