DIEHL (Paris): Happiness of the day forming a writing desk in blackened wood inlaid with brass ornamentation of gilded bronze. by a frieze drawer. Arched feet. Signed by DIEHL, 19 rue Michel le Comte, PARIS. Napoleon III period. a detached brass net. Charles-Guillaume Diehl (1811-1885), cabinetmaker of German origin. Tabletier by training, he began his career as a cabinetmaker in Paris in 1840 at 170 rue Saint Martin. His shop was then located at number 16 rue Michel Lecomte then at number 21 and finally 19 of the same street. His workshops are located at 39 rue Saint Sébastien and develop a production of furniture, base cupboards, support furniture often of incredible luxury and which the Parisian and international clientele of the time loves. From 1878, he specialized in the creation of very studied and very learned neo-Greek furniture and participated in the universal exhibitions of 1855, 1867, 1869 and 1878. He received the bronze medal at the 1867 exhibition, the medal of honor at the central union exhibition of 1869 and the medal of progress in Vienna in 1873. Charles-Guillaume DIEHL's furniture is distinguished by the particular care given to bronzes and is often stamped.
