Gustave Guêtant (1873-1953) was a French sculptor and draftsman.
Born in Marseille, Guétant follows the artistic line of his family, with an art relay father and leather illustrator of book covers.
Interested in painting, he studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Marseille. Then he decides to join the sculpture classes. From 1896 to 1900, he was a student at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His masters are Jules Coutan and Louis-Ernest Barrias. Since 1903, Gutant often exhibits at the Salon of French artists. He hears about the Ecole de Nancy, and its artistic development interests him. He frequents artists from this school, but also from the Decorative Arts movement. In 1909, he became an academy officer.
In 1914 Guétant was in the infantry. While stationed in the rear-front offices, he discovered the village of Saint-Dié already under attack. It's heartbreaking. His wife will also bequeath works to the museum of Saint-Dié after the death of the artist. After the war, Gutant continues an activity in the workshop of his family, and illustrates blankets, following his passion for the Decorative Arts. He is a jury for many Salons.
In 1930, Gutant began an intense creation of drawings and animal sculpture. He gives his animals feelings and sensations, which shows a deep admiration for these living beings.
