This very beautiful painting offers us a landscape, most certainly from Italy. A mountainous place, dotted with lakes, with a deep perspective, it is animated by characters going about their business. It is interesting to note that the artist takes up certain stylistic characteristics of an illustrious predecessor, Joos II de Momper (1564; 1635) with his three horizontal planes in three colors, brown for the foreground, green for the second and blue for the third in perspective background.

Bartholomeus Appelmann (The Hague 1628; 1686)

Dutch painter of Italian landscapes and seascapes, he left for Italy around 1650. In Rome he joined the Bentvueghels, an association of Dutch and Flemish painters taking the nickname of Hector . He also spends time in Tivoli and more generally in the Roman countryside which inspires him in the realization of many works. Returning to The Hague in 1676, he became a master in the guild of Saint Luke. He produced many Italian landscapes then very fashionable in the Netherlands and views of Rome, Tivoli... In the palace of Soestdjik, residence of the Prince of Orange, he is in charge of the realization of many wall decorations. He collaborated with other famous painters of his time, Johannes Lingenbach, Adriaen van de Velde, Philipp Woumerman and the portrait painter Jan de Baen for whom he painted the landscapes of his portraits These known works are rare, they can be admired in some museums , Nantes, Vienna, Vaduz, Mainz...
