"Old Oil Painting Portrait Of A Quality Man Signed Albert Gräfle (1809-1889)"
Old painting, oil on canvas, German school signed below by the painter Albert Gräfle (1809-1889) dating from the 19th century. The scene represents a quality portrait of a man. Very good condition, well framed, see photos. Biography His parents sent him to the gymnasium and then to the University of Friborg where he studied philosophy. At the same time he took lessons in drawing from nature with the painter Franz Joseph Zoll (1770-1833). He then went to Munich where he worked at the Academy of Fine Arts with Franz Xaver Winterhalter, Peter von Cornelius and Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld. Among other things, he painted in the historicist style the Consecration of Archbishop Gebhard von Zäringen in 1084 (1832), Ossian and Malvina (1834), the Wedding of Margrave Rudolf von Baden with Countess Kunigunde von Eberstein (1835). In 1840, he went to Paris. He participated in the Salon of 1845 where he received a gold medal from Louis-Philippe I. He then traveled to Germany: he produced works in Berlin, Düsseldorf and Munich before settling in Karlsruhe. In 1848, he painted landscapes of Alsace and the Black Forest and then went to England at the request of Queen Victoria. The following year he was in Paris on October 18, the day Frédéric Chopin died. He produced the composer's mortuary portrait. In 1852, Albert Graefle founded an art school in Munich. He produced still lifes, genre paintings and a series of portraits of celebrities of his time: Queen Victoria, the Grand Duchess and the Grand Duke of Baden, Crown Prince Friedrich Wilhelm and the Princess of Prussia, the Emperor and Empress of Mexico, the Count of Quadt-Wykradt-Isny and his wife, etc. We also owe him altarpieces and his most famous painting showing Ludwig van Beethoven and his intimate friends (Die Intimen bei Beethoven). King Louis II entrusted him with various commissions, in particular pastel portraits of characters from the reigns of Louis XIV and his successors, in the corner cabinets of Linderhof Palace Dimensions without frame: 78 cm / 61 cm. with frame: 90 cm / 73 cm.
