Object description :

"Jacques Barthélémy Delamarre, Portrait Of "pompom" Said Dog Of Marie-antoinette"
Jacques Barthélémy Delamarre (active in the 18th century)
Portrait of “Pompon” known as Marie-Antoinette's dog
French school of the 18th century

The portrait represents a small poodle, groomed like a lioness. This little companion dog was very fashionable in the 18th century in aristocratic circles and at the court of Versailles.

"Pompon" is said to be one of Marie-Antoinette's dogs, the painter Jacques Barthélémy Delammare made several portraits of this little dog. It is always represented in the same way, only the decor differs.

On our painting, he is seated on a red velvet cushion embellished with rich gold thread trimmings edged with 4 pompoms at the corners. In the background, the niche-stool completes the decor. A portrait close to ours is kept in the collections of the Château de Vendeuvre and other versions of Pompon placed on a desk with a feather in an inkwell and a wax stick have entered the art market.
