Henri Sigfried Richard count of Querelles was an officer, designer, illustrator and sculptor who knew Eugène Delacroix. And Delacroix speaks of his wife Viscountess Hortense Louise Françoise de Beauharnais (daughter of the Marquis François de Beaumarchais) in his correspondence. He called her "the good Hortense" and recognized in her a taste and feelings for painting, for Rubens in particular. Richard de Querelles was battalion commander and commander of the foot guards of the imperial guard. Faithful to Napoleon, he went into exile in London and undoubtedly participated in the attempted uprising of Louis Napoleon Bonaparte in Boulogne-sur-Mer in 1840.
