Magnificent portrait of the 17th century of Henri de Tour D'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne. Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, known as Turenne, born at the castle of Sedan on September 11, 1611 and died near Sasbach (Episcopal Principality of Strasbourg, Holy Roman Empire) on July 27, 1675, is a gentleman and famous French military past to posterity under the name given to him by his title of viscount of Turenne. Marshal of France in 1643 and general marshal of the king's camps and armies in 1660, he is one of the best generals of Louis XIII and then of Louis XIV. Popular figure, strategist of great talent, military glory of the Grand Siècle par excellence, he remains an indisputable master of the art of war. During his lifetime he was greatly admired both by his soldiers and the grand marshals of Europe; when he learns of Turenne's death at the battle of Salzbach, Montecuccoli exclaims: “Today a man died who did honor to mankind. Napoleon himself admired his military genius. Portraits of the Viscount are very rare and this painting is of remarkable quality.
