Matviy VAISBERG (1958): Ukrainian "Modernist Portrait"; український; Pastel on paper signed on the back Dimension: 43 x 32 cm Matvei Vaisberg is the only son of Semion Vaisberg, a chess trainer, and Shelly Harzman, an art historian; a grandson of the poet Matvey Harzman (Motl Harzman) on his mother's side and Berta J. Vaisberg, seven-time Ukrainian chess champion, on his father's side. In 1985 he graduated from the Ukrainian Institute of Printing Ivan Fyodorov (now Ukrainian Academy of Printing). In 1988, he began to participate in group exhibitions. In 1990, his first solo exhibition took place at the Historical Museum of Podol (Kiev). More than fifty of his group and personal exhibitions have already taken place, including those of the National Art Museum [1] (Kiev), Kiev National Museum of Russian Art (Kiev), Odessa Museum of Contemporary Art (Odessa ), Cherkassy Museum of Fine Arts (Cherkassy), Berlin Wall Museum (Berlin), Ukrainian Institute of America (New York), [2] House of Europe (London), [3] the Sejm of the Republic of Poland (Warsaw), Georgian National Museum Georgia. [4] Creative work Vaisberg deeply appreciates the creative work of many artists, notably that of Georges Rouault, Chaïm Soutine and Francisco Goya. With Andrij Mokrousov, art and literary critic, he developed the concept of rearguard art many years ago [5] and represents it in his art. In addition to being foreign to mimetic, it cannot be considered at the same time as close to abstract art. Without considering himself as a religious artist or a religious human, he nevertheless remains a faithful follower of biblical themes (Days of Creation, Book of Job, Scenes of TaNaK). In 2014, the artist turned to the event, taking place in Kiev in 2013-2014, and painted the "Wall" cycle. Painting cycles Matvei Vaisberg is the author of "Seven Days" (1998-1999), [6] [7] "Judaean Desert" (2001), [8] "Anthropic Principle" (2004-2008), [9] [10] “Dancings” (2006-2009), “Scenes from TaNaK” (2006), [1] [11] “Holy Heaven Remains Silent” (2008), “Pur Vital” (2006), “Threetwotwo” (2009), [ 12] [13] "Wall" (from Old Testament prints by Hans Holbein the Younger, 2012), [14] and others. In 2014, it is once again that the artist painted a cycle, called “Wall”. [15] [16] The cycle was carried out from 28.01.2014 to 08.03.2014. It was dedicated to the event on Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square) in Kiev in 2013-2014. The author himself was a witness to the developments and an active participant in the historical event. The cycle consists of 28 images, each measuring 45 cm by 60 cm, which are displayed as a single block, resembling a wall. The cycle was broadcast in Kiev, London, Berlin, New York, Los Angeles, Warsaw (Sejm of the Republic of Poland, 05.03.2015) and in other cities of Poland. The artist will present the cycle to the public in Italy, the USA and Ukraine. Book design Vaisberg is an illustrator of the books of Sholem Aleichem, Eduard Bagritsky, Isaac Babel, [17] Grigorijus Kanovičius, José Ortega y Gasset, Carl Jung, Søren Kierkegaard, Fyodor Dostoyevsky [18] and Joseph Roth. [19] [20] Works of art in museums and galleries Matvei Vaisberg's pictorial and graphic works can be found in museums and galleries in Kiev, Vilnius, Chicago, Berlin and other cities as well as in private collections in different countries of the world. In 2014, the Magnes Museum (Berkeley, California, USA) purchased 12 paintings by Vaisberg for its collection of Jewish art and life. [21] Four of them are portraits of famous Yiddish-speaking Jewish poets, executed by the Soviet NKVD in 1952 (case of the Jewish Antifascist Committee, Night of the Murdered Poets), Itzik Feffer (1900-1952), Leib Kvitko ( 1890 -1952), Peretz Markish (1895-1952), David Hofstein (1889-1952); four - famous writers and poets Sholem Aleichem, Osip Mandelstam, Boris Pasternak and David Bergelson.
