Object description :

"Orazio De Ferrari (1606-1657). Suzanne Au Bain"
Genoese school from the beginning of the 17th century Oil on canvas Presented in a superb wooden frame carved with scrolls and stylized flowers tinted dark brown with gold highlights. Model called "Sansovino" Dimensions with frame: 130 x 147 cm. The frame: 110 x 127 cm The subject of our painting is the episode from the Old Testament Suzanne au bain or Suzanne & the Elders. The chapter tells the story of a young and beautiful woman, Suzanne who, observed while taking her bath, refuses the dishonest proposals of two old men. To take revenge, they then accuse her of adultery and have her condemned, but the prophet Daniel, still a teenager, intervenes and proves her innocence. And it is the accusing old men who will be punished. The sober layout inscribes this beautiful composition in a tight framing, the painter renders with a strong dramatic intensity, the deep seriousness of the expressions of the quasi-naturalistic faces of the three characters. From a stylistic point of view, the work is distinguished by this very particular way of gradually making the shadow bodies emerge from the background to the foreground, characteristic of Ferrari's work. The beautiful Suzanne, seen naked on the right, in the foreground, in full light, seated on the edge of the stone basin, is repeated in other of his works. Orazio de Ferrari was born in Italy in Volri in 1606 and died in Genoa in 1657, he is a Baroque painter of the Genoese school. He produced many paintings for the many churches in Liguria and received orders to decorate the princely palace of Monaco. Letters preserved in the archives of the palace (September 3 and 9, 1633) prove that the artist then painted in his Genoese studio for Honoré II, Prince of Monaco. In addition, he is his supplier of works of art to other Italian artists. There are writings which attest to the painter's stays in the Principality. Thus, the Toulouse painter Hilaire Pader, who stayed there from 1649 to 1653, said in his book Enigmatic Dream on Universal Painting, printed in 1658, to have met him there. The favor in which Prince Honoré II holds Ferrari is materialized by the delivery in the name of King Louis XIV, in November 1652, of the collar of the Order of Saint-Michel. We also owe this artist many frescoes. In the fall of 1654, he returned, probably for the last time to Monaco, for a stay of a few months. He then produced sets and stage sets for a ballet, the Victories of Minerva or the Triumph of Virtue over Vices, where the Duchess of Valentinois, née Aurélia Spinola, daughter-in-law of Honoré II, appeared with several members of the Provencal nobility. Orazio Ferrari's Monegasque period coincides with the peak of his career. He died of the plague in Genoa in 1657. Many museums have in their collections works by this artist who deserves to be better known. See the book by Pietro Donati "Orazio de Ferrari" Sagep 1997 edition Good condition.
