"Large Rank Square Mandarin Pinyin Embroidered Qing Dynasty"
Large mandarin rank square* of embroidered silk which was generally on the breastplates of mandarins and figures of the imperial court.
this square is very finely embroidered with silver and gold threads, the decoration is very rich, the outer border includes shou symbols of longevity alternating with traditional Buddhist symbols.
In the center there is a silvery part (not embroidered, formerly held with dots of glue in the center) which corresponds to the fifth row.
* A Mandarin Square (Traditional Chinese: 補 子; Simplified Chinese: 补 子; pinyin: bŭzi; Wade-Giles: putzŭ) was a large, embroidered badge sewn onto the garment of the mandarins of Imperial China.
This badge was embroidered with brilliantly colored representations of animals or birds indicating the rank of the dignitary who wore it.
