Object description :

"A Louis XVI Neoclassical Giltwood Mirror Late 18th Century Circa 1785."
A Louis XVI Neoclassical giltwood mirror late 18th century circa 1785. Elegant neoclassical mirror of the Louis XVI period, made of carved and gilded lime wood, burnished and lined on a frame of maritime pine. Of quadrilateral vertical rectangle form, it is constituted in periphery of a rod with flat profile, decorated with endless convex flutes with concave buttress purely of neoclassical style, stemming from the Greco-Roman influence very in vogue during the last third of the XVIIIth century and premises of the following one following the discoveries of Herculaneum and Pompeii which strongly influenced the stylistic characters of the time. The quality of the work of sculpture in strong relief is accentuated by that of the burnished and the matis. The mirror is set in a frame mounted with clappers made of Mediterranean pine. The mirror is constituted of two plates of glasses to two thirds-one third, doubled planes of tin and lead plunged in a bath of mercury in order to dissolve them there. The tin associated with the lead gives then this hot and luminous side to the mirror known as "with mercury". It is worth noting the nervousness of the execution of this mirror which is equaled only by the minimalism of the purest neo-classical style free of the excesses of previous styles. It should be noted that the very nature of the minimalist decoration with infinite fluting allows this mirror to be positioned both horizontally and vertically. Moreover its dimensions allow to present it on a piece of furniture or close to the floor Observation: This mirror is in very good condition, slightly pitted. Dimensions: Height 171cm - width 88.8cm.
