The ancient Roman personifications of love and desire, Venus and Cupid, feature on this fantastic Louis XVI mantel clock. Finely cast in a resplendent gilded bronze, they are represented with a dove on the hand of Venus, another ancient symbol of love. Venus is depicted in draped clothing leaning over the central pedestal, while Cupid is depicted in midair with a quiver of arrows at her feet. Under the two figures is the marble pedestal in which the dial and the movement of the enamel clock are fixed, mounted with garlands and foliage in gilded bronze and mounted on tops in gilt bronze. The clock face is enamelled and contains Roman numerals, as well as the signature 'Diot A Paris'. The clock is in excellent and perfect working order.
