Józef Tadeusz Makowski, known in France as Tadé Makowski, born January 21, 1882 in Oświęcim in Poland and died November 1, 1932 in Paris, France, is a Polish painter who mainly practiced his art in France. A landscape painter in his early days, he evolved towards Post-Impressionism and Cubism during his career. He produces more than six hundred oil paintings and thousands of drawings and watercolors, the main themes of which are children, the world of work and nature. Tadeusz was born in Oświęcim in Poland in 1882, to Stanislas and Pétronille Vanczemy1. He studied at Jagiellonian University from 1902 to 1906 and fine arts at the Academy of Fine Arts in Cracow from 1903 to 1908 with painters Jan Stanisławski (en) and Józef Mehoffer. He moved to Paris in the fall of 1908. Admiring the works of the painter Pierre Puvis de Chavannes, he befriended the painter Henri Le Fauconnier in 1910 and frequented the group of cubist painters of Montparnasse. He participated in the Salon des Indépendants of 1913. At the start of the First World War, he left Paris. Invited by Władysław Ślewiński in Brittany, he settled in the fishing port of Doëlan in Finistère, before returning to Paris at the end of the conflict. Over the following years, he made several trips to Brittany and stayed in Auvergne and the Netherlands in particular. In 1923, he exhibited in the company of several painters, including his friend Marcel Gromaire, in the Berthe Weill art gallery, an experience that he repeated alone in 1927 and 1928. In the capital, he befriended with Simon Laks, composer and violinist He died in Paris in 1932 and is buried in the Champeaux de Montmorency cemetery.
