Vandel would have been the pupil of the painter Anne-Louis Girodet in Paris before 1820. He then settled in St Claude in the Jura where he perfected himself in trompe l'oeil drawing for the city's tabletting workshops. He became professor of drawing at the college of St Claude around 1820 and began a career as a painter in the upper Jura. The painting is sold with its period gilded frame gilded with gold.
