Object description :

"Jan Davidsz De Heem (1606-1684) (workshop). Still Life With Lobster, Flowers, Citrus And Pitcher"
Oil on oak panel, 3 joined planks doubled. Old frame with inverted profile and unhooked corners in blackened wood. Dimensions with frame: 77 x 94 cm. The panel alone: 49 x 65 cm. In this very beautiful, still life, the painter invites us to a banquet. On a wooden table partially covered with a blue fabric, fruits, flowers and shellfish are presented in harmony. Two large glasses of Venice, blown with refinement, are filled with red and white wine. To the right, in the foreground, a Delft blue and white earthenware pitcher reflects the light from a window on its silver lid. The background is sober and an overhead light illuminates the entire composition and licks the silver handle of the knife which has peeled the lemon and is now in balance. Thanks to impasto, the painter succeeded in showing us the roughness of the skin which rolls up and by its vermilion red glaze the transparency of cherries. Our painting executed by the painter's studio with his collaboration is exceptionally well preserved and perfectly illustrates the Nordic taste for still lifes intended for a wealthy clientele, loving luxury and beautiful interiors. Jan Davidsz de Heem born in Utrecht in 1606 died in Antwerp in 1684. A disciple of his father and of Baltasar van der Ast, he lived much of his life in Antwerp. He entered as a member of the corporation Saint Luc d'Utrecht, then in 1635 or 1636 in the corporation of painters of Antwerp. Married twice: the first in 1626 to Aletta van Weede from whom he had two sons Jansz in 1628 and Cornelis in 1631 who was also a painter; the second time with Anne Puckers with whom he had a son Jan in 1650. The main characteristics of his still lifes are intelligent transparencies and a mastery of light and shadow which gives volume to things. Jan Davidsz de Heem was a great painter of still lifes and bouquets of flowers, and many of his works hang on the picture rails of the world's greatest museums.
