A Louis XV Mirror, With Attributes Of The Goddess Artemis, Mid 18th Century.

Louis XV mirror in carved and gilded, burnished and amati linden wood. Polylobed rectangular in shape, this mirror is made up of a mirror mainly encased in ice-creams. Sideways decorated with two large twining linear braces with garlands of roses and other leafy peonies. These are horizontally united by centered reserves of florets and acanthus. The pediment receives in the middle part a decoration of Greek mythology, the attributes of the goddess of the hunt; a quiver filled with his arrows and a flaming torch. The horizontally base receives a mediating bed of roses and peonies in foliage; the whole resting on two small sinuous feet wrapped in spirals. The main ice as well as the ice creams consist of a flat glass plate lined with tin and lead immersed in a mercury bath in order to dissolve them there. The tin associated with the lead then giving this warm and luminous side to the mirror called "mercury". Note the delicacy, finesse and nervousness of execution of this mirror, which is more atypical. The decoration borrowed from Greek mythology, tells us more about its origin, very probably a hunting area; Artemis being the divinity of wild nature and hunting.
