Benedict Benoît ROUGELET (1834-1894)
Playful Cupid
Bronze, old cast with brown patina signed “Rougelet” to the base, standing on a circular green onyx base.

Formed in the atelier of his father and that of renowned sculptor, Francisque-Joseph Duret (1804-1865), Benoît (ditBénédict) Rougelet first showed at the Salon of 1868 and received a number of public commissions. He is particularly known for his playful groups of putti of which the present bronze cupid is a fine example. Over the course of his career, he executed a series of sculptures including a monument to painter Jean-Baptiste Greuze for the city of Tournus and a group of medallions for the façade of the Hôtel de Ville in Paris. Rougelet also created marble and bronze groups of playful putti of similar size and style to the present bronze sculpture including one sold Christie’s, London, 29 April 2010, lot 254 (£33,650). He is awarded a «Mention Honorable» at both the Salon in 1887 and at the Exposition Universelle in 1889.
