Louis Rollet is a French painter from the school of traveling painters of the early twentieth century. He travels extensively in Asia and in “Overseas” testifying in his numerous paintings on hardboard of popular subjects, inscribed in majestic landscapes. Its thick textures and its removed touch plunges us into the materiality of these timeless moments of life. He first exhibited in France at the Salon des Indépendants, at the Salon de la Société des Artistes Français, as well as at the Galerie George Petit. A pupil of Fouqueray, he won the Prix de Madagascar in 1929. He was a teacher at the School of Fine Arts in Antananarivo, created by Louis Dumoulin at the beginning of the century, and strongly influenced the Malagasy painters he trained. His palette is then rich in original colors perfectly translating the characteristic atmosphere of the markets and the landscapes of the island. It illustrates Maurice Allain's book, “Notre belle France d'Outre-mer”. From 1921 he exhibited at the Salons of French artists, and at the Salons of independent from 1926. He received a silver medal in 1929 and 1937 at the International Exhibition. In 1930, he won the Indochina Prize. He exhibited in 1931 at the Colonial Exhibition in Paris, in 1934 at that of Naples, in 1935 at the Universal Exhibition in Brussels. He was knighted in the Legion of Honor in 1938. He became director of the School of Cambodian Fine Arts in Phnom Pen and remained in Cambodia until 1945.
