Object description :

"Alexandre Falguière, Dorothée And Her Goat Marble Sculpture, 1874"
This statuary white marble sculpture was made by Alexandre Falguière as indicated by the signature on the base "A. Falguière" in 1874. It also bears the first name of "Dorothée". It represents a beautiful peasant woman holding a basket in one of her arms where a kid rests, while the goat walks by her side. Alexandre Falguière was a French sculptor born in Toulouse. He was a pupil of François Jouffroy and won the first Grand Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1859 with his injured Mézence bas-relief. He was later appointed professor at the School of Fine Arts then was elected member of the Academy of Fine Arts. His works are mainly devoted to sculpture but he also produces a few paintings. He realizes the subject of Dorothée and her goat, as well as that of Clytie, Daphnis and Chloe, the Truth, Galathée, Mlle Lili, in small formats executed for reproduction. Our sculpture is not cleaned and not restored, we can notably see a shine on the nose and on the tail, a finger and an ear of the goat glued together.
