"Oil On Panel Signed Thomas Wijck/ Wyck/ Wyke (1616-1677) Interior Scene Holland 17th Century"
Very beautiful oil on panel signed by the Dutch painter Thomas Wijck.

The support of this painting is a panel of hand sawn wood.

This painting is sold with its superb original frame, it is a precious 17th century Dutch frame in carved and blackened ebony wood with “guilloché” and “vaguelette” decorations, it is embellished with a veneer of tortoise scale.

Of great execution quality, this beautiful Dutch interior scene is beautifully lit by the exterior light that penetrates the room.

The painter particularly treated the atmosphere of this intimate scene by painting a multitude of everyday objects present in a kitchen of a Dutch interior. These elements are also represented in other works of this painter: the window with small tiles and its folding interior shutter, the sandstone and glass pots, the tin pitcher, the earthenware plates of Delft. The objects scattered on the ground are also typical of the way in which this painter represents the interiors (see the Alchemist’s painting of the Rijksmuseum of Amsterdam).

Like all the paintings I propose, this oil is in its juice (nature), as I discovered it. It is very well preserved, I leave the choice to the purchaser to leave it as it is or not.
I was able to discover the signature on the barrel, located at the bottom left (Twyck), thanks to a powerful lighting oriented on the object. Indeed, with the naked eye, because of the slightly yellowed varnish and the dark light of the painting, it is difficult to guess.
While doing some research, I found a drawing by the painter Thomas Wijck currently in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum (New York), which corresponds to the preparatory work of this oil.

All the genius of the Flemish master Thomas Wijck is found in this oil on panel: the touch of the painter, the restitution of the atmosphere of a Dutch interior of the seventeenth, the light in dark light, the details of the objects, the daily life, the faces and attitudes of the characters.
The painting I propose is a discovery, a true museum masterpiece that bears witness to the golden age of Dutch painting.

Dimension with frame : 60,5 x 53 cm
Dimension outside the frame : 41,5 x 34 cm

Thomas Wijck is listed in the Benezit, he is a painter of the golden age of Dutch painting.
President of the guild from 1658 to 1664.
Thomas Wijck was born in 1616 in Beverwijk in the Netherlands. He comes from a family of painters and draughtsmen. He learned painting from his father. He travelled to Italy around 1640. This is the year that we find the trace of ‘Tommaso fiammingo, pittore’ (Thomas the Flemish, painter) as resident in the Via de la Fontanella in Rome. He also resided in Naples, where he executed numerous sketches preparing drawings of the coastal landscape.
In 1642, Thomas returned to the Netherlands and settled in Haarlem. He became a member of the Guild of Saint-Luc in Haarlem. Wyck’s work is divided into two parts. The first includes markets, ruins, street scenes, harbours and coastal landscapes with a multicoloured popular life and topographical patterns of Rome and Naples. The second is where he depicts Dutch interiors in which scholars, alchemists, weavers and women appear in domestic work. In 1660, he was appointed dean of the Guild of Painters. He left for England during the Restoration, and executed many works on site. During his journey he was accompanied by his son Jan Wyck, who was also a painter who remained in England for the rest of his life and played an important role in the field of painting in that country. He also painted views of London before and after the Great Fire. In 1668 he participated again in the guild of painters of Haarlem as a juror, then as dean from 19070 to 1976.
He died in August 1677 at Haarlem.
