Franz Hogenberg Frans(né en 1535 à Malines, mort en 1590 à Cologne) est un graveur sur cuivre et aquafortiste d’origine belge.
Frans Hogenberg était la figure centrale d’une scène d’érudits et d’artistes néerlandais exilés, qui sont aujourd’hui regroupés dans une «école de cartographie» de la cartographie, regroupant non seulement des protestants de Flandre et de Brabant, mais aussi des catholiques en fuite des provinces du nord. Ensemble avec les habitants, ils ont formé un réseau complexe et extrêmement intéressant, qui a donné une impulsion importante à la fabrication de cartes dans d’autres régions allemandes et même au-delà.
En 1572, il contribue à la publication d’un atlas des villes du monde, Civitates Orbis Terrarum, en collaboration avec Georg Braun. Les gravures d’Hogenberg sont d’une valeur inestimable pour la connaissance des villes médiévales avant les destructions massives dues à la Guerre de Trente Ans ou aux travaux de rénovation de l’époque baroque. Aux représentations détaillées des villes et des paysages s’ajoutent de nombreux éléments de décor tels que les véhicules, les navires, les personnages en costumes d’époque et d’innombrables scènes de genre. Les images sont décorées avec les armoiries des villes.
Hogenberg – les guerres de religions
Spectaculaire gravure originale, l’édition de cette collection de gravures documente de façon remarquable les trois premières guerres de religion en France, leur donnant un support iconographique contemporain, qui fait si souvent défaut.
Comme l’on sait, ce sont deux commanditaires flamands, Pierre Le Vignon et Nicolas Castellain, qui fournirent les fonds pour réaliser cette suite d’estampes, confiée par contrat du 23 juillet 1569 à Jacques Périssin et Jean Tortorel. Les deux hommes commencèrent par une série de dessins, puis donnèrent une suite sur cuivre et une suite sur bois (cette dernière pour une vente à prix plus modeste). L’ensemble connut plusieurs tirages presque simultanés (au moins 3, et jusqu’à 9 pour certaines estampes), légendés en français, allemand, italien ou latin, sans oublier un retirage médiocre au XVIIe siècle (avec des modifications de détail dans les textes et une actualisation de l’orthographe).
