Excellent edition published and annotated by Antoine-François Jolly (1672-1753), also containing a Memoir on the life and works of Molière by the playwright Jean-Louis Ignace de La Serre (1662-1751). "Boucher's masterpiece as an illustration: it is one of the most beautiful books of the first part of the 18th century" (Cohen). This edition is indeed illustrated with a portrait of Molière engraved by Lépicié after Coypel, more than 300 vignettes, initials and cul-de-lamps by Boucher, Blondel and Oppenord, several of which are repeated, and 33 plates engraved by Laurent Cars after Boucher. Second edition copy with in particular the fault corrected on page 360 of the sixth volume where the word “countess” is correctly spelled. A few brown leaves and fine scattered rednesses, as almost always. Beautiful copy in perfect modern binding in imitation, made around 1950.
