Very Rare Pewter Wine Jug - Langres, XVIII Th Century flag

Object description :

"Very Rare Pewter Wine Jug - Langres, XVIII Th Century"
OPEN PITCHER in pewter shape with shouldered and cylindrical body, short neck, base and cup in quarter round. Thumb rest.
Measuring marks previously observed with the controls for the vintages of 1691, 1731 and 1738:
1 ° - L crowned.
2 ° - large lily.
Height: 21.6 c m.
LANGRES (Champagne), First half of the 18th century

Very rare and in very good condition
The typology of this pitcher is atypical compared to that generally encountered in the Champagne centers.
These measures without covers, rarer than those with one, were preferred because they were easier to use in places open to the public.
The capacity of those used in inns, drinking establishments, etc., had to be checked periodically by the royal or ecclesiastical power to assure "good measure" to the consumer, but in fact, this regulation was little applied and the pitchers which bear gauging marks are very rare
