Popular Imagery, Saint Louis, 18th C. flag

Object description :

"Popular Imagery, Saint Louis, 18th C."
Very rare imagery, 18th century. Woodcut printed in four stenciled colored sheets in blue and orange, representing in majesty Saint Louis king of France (bottom in the board). On the right we see a city on the horizon and ships in the port of Tunis as well as the king placing his hands on a kneeling figure; a cartouche where we read "Saint Louis heals the plague victims". On the left, a crucifixion above a table decorated with royal attributes: the crown, the scepter, the fleurs-de-lis. The very rich ornamentation may recall the imagery of Letourmy in Orléans, but unfortunately the framer who glued (and perhaps saved) this engraving on cardboard cut the printer's marks. Good condition, however, and remarkable for the subject, size and rarity.
