It is a jewel of the Golden Age of Flemish painting, the work of a painter from the workshop of the Dutch Abraham van Calraet (Dordrecht 1642 - Dordrecht 1722), author of a composition exactly the same with the same main scene, and to which ours must necessarily have been inspired.

In particular, it is a work originally owned by the wealthy Dutch aristocrat and art collector from Dordrecht, Hendrick Adolf Steengracht van Duivenvoorde, then sold to a Paris merchant, the antique dealer Charles Brunner, in 1914.

The painting, datable towards the end of the seventeenth century, depicts two parked horses, held at the reins by a gentleman, assigned to their surveillance, while a young commoner stops to admire the two steeds. In the seventeenth century this would have been a rather common scene outside a post office, a place where riders could stop and then get supplies and change their horses.

The elegance of the composition and the meticulousness with which the figures are outlined are aspects that highlight the talent of the painter, who inherited from Van Calraet the ability to paint animals and, as we can also see in the painting in question, particularly horses, where his brushstrokes are singular and unmistakable in rendering the mantle.

Other works by the author, with leathers we can easily detect similarities with the canvas in question are:

- Abraham van Calraet, Landscape with three horses and a boy near a house, Hermitage, Saint Petersburg, (
- Two knights and a hostess in an inn, British Museum, London (
- A boy holding a gray horse, The National Gallery, London (
- Gray piebald horse and two other horses with riders, Houston (Texas), Museum of Fine Arts Houston (
- Boy with Three Horses and Two Dogs, Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia (
- White horse in a riding school, Dulwich Picture Gallery, London (
- Two knights and a boy near a house, Dorotheum (Vienna) 2008-06-17, nr. 73 (

Excellent state of conservation.

The work is sold with a certificate of photographic authenticity in accordance with the law.
