Odalisque Orientaliste Painting Signed By The Painter Louis Devedeux XIXth

Louis Devedeux (1820 - 1874), French Orientalist painter listed in the Benezit.

Born in Clermont-Ferrand in 1820, Louis Devedeux began his training in the drawing school in his hometown before entering in 1836 in Paul Delaroche’s studio at the “Ecole des Beaux-Arts” of Paris. He is a key figure in Clermont’s cultural life. He made a name for himself at the 1861 “Salon de Paris” with an Orientalist subject. But it was above all the salon of 1867 that brought him the consecration, with the purchase by Napoleon III of his painting, “Slave Merchant”, Asia Minor.

Devedeux made his first known Orientalist work in 1840, but it was from the salons of 1855 and 1859 that he favoured Orientalist subjects. Like Eugène Fromentin, Léon Belly and Narcisse Diaz, he belongs to the second generation of Orientalist painters who continue the romantic exoticism of Eugène Delacroix and Gabriel Decamps, another presumed master of the Auvergne painter.

Like all the paintings I propose, I sell this painting as I discovered it. This oil on canvas is in “its juice” (nature).
The canvas is in pretty good condition, a slight tear easily restorable is present at the bottom right. Also an ancient restoration was done at the top of the painting.
