Although born in Paris, Jules Defer spent the most of his life on the French Riviera. He was a pupil of Victor Bertin and Louis Hersent at the institute in 1821. In 1829, he presents the Grand Prix de Rome competition. Most of his work was not discovered until after his death. Mainly imaginary or graphic landscape, subjects on which he practiced daily. His drawing is nervous and incisive in the manner of 18th century landscape masters such as Thomas Desfriches.
