Object description :

"Dog In A Chicken Run By Joos Vincent De Vos"
Vincent de Vos (Kortrijk, 1829 - 1875): Belgian animal painter. He trained at the Kortrijk Academy between 1848 and 1852. His main influence was the animal painter Edouard Woutermaertens (1819 - 1897), who had himself been a pupil of the famous animal painter Louis Robbe (1806 - 1887). He mainly painted dogs and monkeys with a realistic and psychological sensitivity. In his portraits of dogs and monkeys, De Vos appears as a brilliant mocker.
He exhibited regularly in Belgium and France, but was also very successful in America. Works in the museums of Bruges, Courtrai, Lille and Tourcoing.

Our painting is typical of the artist's animal genre scenes. De Vos specialised in representations of dogs. De Vos is no longer in the romantic tradition of precious, sometimes humorous scenes. Marked by Realism, he depicts with a lively touch the misery of canine life (and by extension of the time), like the painter Joseph Stevens (1816 - 1892), his contemporary.
